The Bonan are considered a priority for outreach due to a probable lack of exposure to Christianity and the absence of active church planting and discipleship efforts. The Bonan are originally Mongol troops sent to their present location on the edge of Chinese territory to act as watch guards against the fierce Tibetans. After decades of intermarriage with other peoples, a distinct people group formed who came to call themselves Bonan, which means "I protect you." This name refers to their long history as the soldiers and protectors of the people in the area.
Ministry Obstacles: There has never been a Bonan church and maybe not a single Bonan believer. Missionaries worked among the neighboring Salar until the 1950s, but they were unable to establish a church. The Bonan are deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, and this creates resistance to outside religious ideas. They are physically and socially distant from areas with active Christian outreach. Evangelism efforts must navigate complex cultural and linguistic differences.
